“There’s something really rewarding about working through a difficult coding issue, delivering the solutions needed, and then seeing everything come together.”

Introduce yourself! How long have you been working at Nutech Digital?

Hi, I’m Denzhel! I’ve been working at Nutech Digital for three years now. I was hired toward the end of the pandemic, which was an interesting time to start a new job. Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to work on multiple software projects for the company.

Before joining Nutech, I studied at Red River College, where I completed the Business Information Technology program, like many of my colleagues.

What is your role at Nutech? What does your typical day look like?

I’m a web and mobile app developer, which means my work involves building and maintaining the software solutions that Nutech offers. My daily responsibilities vary depending on the projects I’m working on, but generally, I spend my time writing and reviewing code, debugging issues, and adding new features to our apps and software.

I could be helping my team develop a brand-new application from scratch, or I could be editing an existing software, improving its functions, and fixing bugs to make it easier to use, faster, or safer. I primarily work in React, Angular, PHP, and C#. Right now, my main focus has been on Nutech’s TDG app, which simplifies the transportation of dangerous goods for truck drivers in Canada, and soon the U.S. as well. It’s exciting to be involved in a project that has a real-world impact and will help thousands of people.

The Nutech TDG app is now available for free download on the App Store and Google Play Store,

What do you like most about your job and working at Nutech?

One of the things I enjoy most about my job is problem-solving. I enjoy having the opportunity to solve complex challenges and find creative solutions. There’s something really rewarding about working through a difficult coding issue, troubleshooting and delivering the solutions needed, then finally seeing everything come together in the end. It keeps me engaged in my day-to-day while working.

At Nutech, I also appreciate the collaborative and supportive environment. Everyone here is great about what they do, and the teamwork is strong. When I’m stuck on a task, I know I can count on my coworkers for help.

What project or task have you enjoyed working on the most?

One of the projects I’m most proud of is the ABMBooks app for ABM Tax. Specifically, I worked on developing the Payroll System, which was one of the most challenging features I’ve ever developed. It required lots of planning, testing, and an understanding of many financial rules, calculations, and habits to ensure accuracy with payroll regulations and overall usefulness for businesses.

Even though it was difficult, it was a rewarding experience because I could see where my work was being used and how it made an impact. Knowing that businesses and users rely on the system I helped build is really cool. It’s always great to see a project go from concept to a fully functioning product that people actively use.

Are there any skills you’ve developed since working at Nutech?

For sure. While my technical skills are always improving, I’d say the two biggest areas of professional and personal development have been my communication skills and problem-solving abilities.

When I first joined Nutech, I was much quieter and more reserved, not usually the one speaking up. Over time, I’ve learned how important clear communication is in a development team, especially when collaborating on large projects. I’ve become more confident in using my voice to help the team push through difficult tasks, expressing my ideas and contributing to discussions, which has helped our team navigate the development process more efficiently.

When it comes to my problem-solving skills, it has significantly improved. I’ve learned to work independently when needed, like when researching and troubleshooting issues, which has made me a more resourceful developer. Instead of getting stuck on a problem, my time at Nutech has helped a lot.

What are some of your interests and hobbies?

Outside of work, I have a few hobbies that take up much of my time and that I’m really passionate about. I enjoy playing video games on my custom PC. Right now, I’ve been into Monster Hunter Wilds. It’s a strategic action RPG game, and it’s super fun.

I also like playing the guitar, my favourite songs to play right now are from John Mayer. His music is great for acoustic guitar, and I love practicing whenever I have some free time.

Any exciting news or a fun fact about yourself?

Yes! Some exciting news is that I’m getting married soon. This coming April we’re having the wedding in the Philippines, where me and my fiancee are both from.
